Driving licence application form (D1) – my new pet project

It’s been a while since I took on one of my little personal projects. I’m pleased to say it’s been a while because I’ve been busy, but most of those projects are hidden behind non-disclosure agreements and threats to have my limbs snapped if I take credit for them (or worse, not get paid).

So here’s the next thing I’m going to do to show off (or make myself look an arse if it goes wrong).

DVLA Application for a driving licence (D1)

There’s a bigger picture of it below, but I didn’t want you to miss the favour I’m going to ask

Have you, or anyone you know, filled this form in recently? What problems did you come across?

Without getting into the problems with the detail (there are plenty of them though), just looking at all the pages shows how much space is taken up with notes for a relatively small amount of questions. Oh, and there’s also a 16 page booklet that tells you ‘How to fill in your Application for a driving licence ( D1)’ and where you’ll fing the answer to the question ‘Where to send my expired UK driving license‘.

So, having publicly set myself this challenge, I’ll be doing my best to document the process of making this form (and its war and peace notes) easier to understand. Wish me luck.

  1. Good luck; can I suggest you move on to the You Gov web site next: and all the university loan stuff which goes on and on and on.

  2. I am 76 0n 17-04-2103 and driving licences then expires.Out of uk before the 18 01 2013 till… 27 april 2013….so cannot apply either on line or at post office to have a legal licence when I return to the uk………another note needed? Why not allow beforehand, if renewal of d/l is free over 70? Photo is up to date ‘cos it is taken from new biometric passport….. maybe a rare combination of events…but possible…..Why not allow earlier applications that are then held(not issued) until due date? Another note?
