Statistical stupidity – part 2

I’m not picking on anyone this time, just making public a musing I have, although it does hark back to the previous post. I’ve been thinking about how statistics can be made to stand out – or hidden if that’s what’s needed. I’m not talking about pulling out large numbers at the side of the text with a caption, the Guardian already have that down to a fine art.

I’m talking about statistics in text. 1 in 5 were red, 20% were green, one in five were black, 1/5 were blue and twenty percent were white.

Clearly the statistics which use words become anonymous, but the surprise of unfamiliar word shapes makes the numbered versions stand out.

If you found this interesting/amusing please tell the bits of the world you're connected to. Thank you.

Let′s discuss: leave a comment and see where the conversation goes
