Is it really needed

It looks like I’ve finally come to the end of what’s been quite a frustrating project.

This has been one of those projects where the client set out determined to include every possible piece of information they had available. As soon as they see how it looks (even with all my best tricks applied) all of a sudden some of the information becomes less important.

Have I made a rod for my own back here, by claiming I can ‘make things easy to understand’? The fact is that a large part of what I do is culling of excess information, and in many cases duplicated information.

I came across this nice little graph by which tries to explain the relationship between quantity of information and amount of confusion. I think the graph is about right, although no matter what the quantity, if the quality isn’t there then confusion will remain.

In here is a lesson to clients. Part of what you pay me to do is throw things away, so if you take the time to think for yourself about what you really need to tell people you’re already half way there.

If you found this interesting/amusing please tell the bits of the world you're connected to. Thank you.
